Sports performance training for any sport

Every sport asks an athlete for the same three things. Elite Speed coaches those three, which is why a multi-sport kid does not need a different gym every season.

What is sports performance training?

Elite Speed runs sports performance training in Granite City, Illinois for athletes in every sport, not one. Every sport asks for the same three things: accelerate, change direction, and repeat it without falling apart. Sessions coach the footwork, the running form and the first three steps that all three depend on.

Illinois high school seasons are set by the IHSA and they do not line up with each other: the state finals land in March for basketball, May for track and field, June for softball and November for boys soccer. One foundation has to carry an athlete across all of them.

Here is the thing nobody tells you at signups. A shortstop breaking on a ground ball, a receiver off the line, a guard closing out on a shooter and a midfielder chasing a through ball are all doing the same job. They are accelerating, then changing direction, then doing it again forty more times before the whistle.

So the honest answer to “what sport is this for” is: the one your kid plays this season, and the one they pick up next season too.

Why the foundation transfers

Sport skill is sport specific. A curveball is a curveball. But the engine underneath it is not. Better running form, cleaner footwork and a faster first step do not know what jersey your kid is wearing, and they follow them onto the field, the court, the diamond and the track.

That is also the practical answer for families running two sports and a job. One membership, one drive, one place that already knows your athlete, instead of a different specialist every time the season flips.

What we are not

We are not a conditioning class with a stopwatch, and we are not a weight room that hands a teenager a program off a clipboard. Groups run 1 to 15 athletes so a coach can watch one kid, name the thing costing them a step, and fix it while they are still standing there.

Ages 13 and up train in the speed and agility class. Younger athletes train in the general speed program, where the same work gets scaled to the age and size of the athlete.

[ 02 ]   The thesis

Every sport is the same three problems

Strip away the ball, the field and the rules, and this is what is left. Train these and you have trained the athlete.

01 · Accelerate

Get to full speed sooner

Almost nothing in youth sport happens at top speed. It happens in the first three steps out of a stance, a shuffle or a standstill. That start is coachable, and it is the single biggest thing most athletes have never been taught.

02 · Change direction

Stop, plant, go again

Cutting is a skill with a technique, not a talent you either have or you do not. Where the foot lands, how low the hips get, what the arms do. Clean it up and your athlete comes out of the cut instead of drifting through it.

03 · Repeat it

Still there in the fourth

The kid who is fastest in the first inning and gone by the fifth has a mechanics problem, not a heart problem. Efficient running form costs less energy, so the tenth sprint looks like the first one.

An Elite Speed coach leading a warm-up stretch on the indoor turf in Granite City, Illinois

One coach, one athlete, one correction at a time

[ 05 ]   The first session

What your athlete walks into

Dynamic warm-up

Movement based, not a stretch circle. By the time the real work starts, hips and ankles are ready for it.

Speed and agility drills

Acceleration, cutting and the first three steps, coached between reps rather than critiqued afterwards.

Sport-specific work

Football players finish with position work. Everyone else takes the same mechanics into their sport’s movements.

You watch it all

Parents stay for the session. The first one costs nothing and there is no pitch waiting at the end of it.

[ 06 ]   Questions

What parents ask about this

Does my athlete have to pick one sport to train for?

No, and most of the athletes here have not. Speed, coordination and change of direction transfer across every sport, so the same session serves a kid who plays football in the fall and baseball in the spring. Elite Speed trains the athlete, not the season.

Is Elite Speed only for football players?

No. Football has the most position-specific programs here, but Elite Speed trains baseball, softball, basketball, soccer and track athletes on the same turf and the same foundation. Brent, one of our reviewers, put it this way: worth doing for every athlete from any sport.

What ages does Elite Speed train?

Elite Speed trains athletes from youth through high school and beyond. The speed and agility class is built for ages 13 and up in groups of 1 to 15 athletes, and younger athletes train in the general speed program, where coaches scale the work to the athlete.

How much does sports performance training cost?

Group training at Elite Speed starts at $30 a month, and memberships across every program run $30 to $480 a month depending on how specific the work gets. A single drop-in class is $30 to $45. The first session is free, so nobody pays to find out whether it fits.

What happens in the first session?

The first session at Elite Speed is free and there is nothing to sign. Your athlete goes through the dynamic warm-up, the speed and agility drills, and position-specific football work if that is their sport. You watch the whole thing, and nobody gets a sales pitch at the end of it.
